“THE DESIGN ISSUE”
HKDA Global Design Awards (HKDA GDA) is a biennial flagship design competition organized by Hong Kong Designers Association (HKDA) since 1975. As a multi-disciplinary design competition, HKDA GDA is accepting worldwide entries from 4 main categories: graphic design, new media design, product design and spatial design.

The “Call for Entries” of HKDA GDA2013 has launched; design professionals are invited to submit their design within those 4 main categories to us from now on until 1 Nov 2013 (Entry Submission Deadline).
Besides, the theme of HKDA GDA2013 is “THE DESIGN ISSUE” which provides an open platform beyond a design competition. Designers are welcome to express their “Design Issue”— notions on their identity, position, thinking, creativity and beliefs in a form of statement on HKDA GDA2013’s official website and the related online social platforms such as Weibo, Facebook and Twitter etc. By sharing thoughts on “Design Issue”, designers can exchange their visions and beliefs with other designer fellows and construct a valuable worldwide design archive.

The “THE DESIGN ISSUE” is a collaboration between Hong Kong based design studio — Milkxhake and 7 young local designers who come in diverse backgrounds. They are invited to share their design beliefs begins with the word “DESIGNER(s)”, and express in typographic forms. The HKDA GDA2013’s official website is also another collaboration with one of the invited designers, it is an open platform for both designers and public to express their own “Design Issue”.

"DESIGNER(s) LOVE THEIR WORKS TO BE SEEN"(設計師喜愛作品被關注) /協作者 (黃嘉遜)作為設計師,作品就是希望吸引別人注意,平面設計師黃嘉遜於其作品正是表達好的作品不應隱藏,應多些被關注。他以「DESIGNER(s)」一詞作為視覺主體,「LOVE THEIR WORKS TO BE SEEN」卻隱藏在句首字體當中,寓意好作品就是要靠自己不斷發掘,作品強調「SEEN」與「UNSEEN」的視覺矛盾。

"DESIGNER(s) SLEEP LESS AND DREAM MORE"(設計師不眠不休在追夢) /協作者 (談俊輝)這是一個很有趣的論題,設計師無論工作或是處理其它事情,大多喜歡很晚才睡,談俊輝以「設計師不眠不休在追夢」幽默地回應自己作為平面設計師的日常習慣。「不眠不休」其實也是為了追尋自己的設計夢想,作品以眼睛作為主要圖像,配合不同字型表現了他眼裡的「視覺夢境」。

DESIGNER(s) LOVE COLLABORATION THAN WORKING ALONE”(設計師喜愛結伴創造多於獨自創作) /協作者 (蕭劍英)一直喜愛角色造型的平面設計師蕭劍英認為設計師獨自創作是孤獨的,有時與友人結伴創造也是一個很好的經驗。他的作品也是以黑白為主,充滿插圖風格的字體設計以背景圖案突出英文「COLLABORATION」一詞,連線的字體設計營造了「結伴創造」的視覺效果。

DESIGNER(s) KEEP MAKING AND BREAKING THE GRID”(設計師不斷創造及打破界限) /協作者 (黎心平)黎心平是本地年輕女平面設計師,她的論題也很有意思。我們常常設計書籍與出版物時,要先制定好「網格」(GRID),才進行版式設計。但網格卻同時會限制常規,她的論題「設計師不斷創造及打破界限」也是一種設計過程的反思。她的視覺作品以沒有規則的「網格」作為起點,並把「BREAKING」一詞拿掉,使句子不能被完整閱讀,但卻又是作品亮點。

"DESIGNER(s) EMBRACE FAILURE"(設計師擁抱失敗) /協作者 (關祖堯)設計是一項非常有挑戰性的工作,作品常常會被讚賞及批評。平面設計師關祖堯以「設計師擁抱失敗」作為自己的論題,寓意能承受失敗的設計師往往在未來會走得更遠更闊。作品以隨意簡單的幾何圖形,配合英文一詞「FAILURE」,字體凌亂的倒在地上,正與他的論題相互呼應。

"DESIGNER(s) ENJOY CLASHING IDEAS WITH OTHERS"(設計師享受意念互相碰撞) /協作者 (朱安邦)平面設計師朱安邦以簡單的黑白線條勾畫出英文字型,並不斷重疊使其產生意念「碰撞」的視覺效果,他認為設計師享受與不同界別的人一起分享及「碰撞」意念,這樣才會產生火花。有趣的是,英文單詞「CLASHING」也容易令人聯想起「CRASHING」,兩者意思雖不同,但意境相近。
